A Fresh Style Icon

Browsing magazines, I always run across interviews of well dressed celebrities.  Often they get asked a question worded similarly to, “Who is your style icon?”  I used to debate the question in my head so I would have a response if I ever became famous.  I had favorite designers, but I was less familiar with other people’s closets.  In the recent past I began reading more magazines and doing more event follow-ups.  There are stars like Rachel Bilson how always rocks the cool California girl vibe in her attire.  And there are others like Halle Berry and Renee Zellweger who never miss the mark with their gowns.  However, my vote for the best dressed celebrity this year goes to the youthful starlet, Selena Gomez.  From her music videos, to her red carpet appearances, and regular daily life activities, she is always on top showing off lust-worthy pieces.  These are just some of my favorite looks from her:

Five Necessary Pieces For Any Fashionista

1. A classic rain trench coat. What better way to beat a dreary rainy day than with a jacket you will love wearing rain or shine? It will not hurt if you add an umbrella with a punchy design. You’ll be the confident and dry girl who can overlook a little weather dismay.

The Fashion Scoop- $164

Bloomingdales- $474

2. Sizzling Lingerie. This blog isn’t about improving your sex life, but hot undergarments make you feel empowered. Knowing how sultry you look in public and keeping the secret of how you look even better underneath keeps you charged even on those slummy days.

Saks Fifth Avenue- $227

Shopbop.com- $34

3. Two little black dresses. You can wear a classic black dress on a date, at a cocktail party, a wedding, a work event, etc. Did I mention that they do not restrict the type of jewelry or the color lipstick you already had in mind? So why not get two so you don’t feel guilty about wearing it to just about everything.

Ann Taylor- $120

The Fashion Scoop- $218

4. Medium-sized silver hoop earrings. I’m not talking about the barely noticeable simplistic silver circles, or the outrageous bangle sized bracelets that are supposed to go in your ear. A nice circular hoop earring though, in silver, looks good with any outfit besides gym gear. They can make your outfit appear, bohemian, urban, dressy, or casual based on what you pair them with.  And, miraculously, they flatter everyone. Just make sure to wear them with complementing jewelry. If you sporting other accessories, try to avoid gold, rhinestones, and pearls.

Banana Republic- $35

Michael Kors- $95

5. The Steal. Just like putting on a designer dress makes us feel warm inside, putting on a find you discovered can make you feel just as good. I once bought this cute dress and my guy friend turned to me and said, “I don’t get how you have all this money to spend!” I was in high school and the only money I was making was from babysitting. He was right, I hardly had a dime. Little did he know though, the price was actually unbeatable.  Every week I pass on the contagious, “go out and spend bug,” this time you can get something you will love to wear that will make you proud to show off your credit card bill for the day…maybe not the month. You know you look awesome, but reveal how much you paid? That is sure to become your best kept secret ;  )

Going Nude

In Taylor Swift’s newly released music video for her song “Mean,” she shows the world of bullies how she will become successful.  She sets the scene off with a stage and a humbling country band, changing to a glitzy dress on a Broadway backdrop with a well groomed back-up group.  The makeup and attitude in the end provides a modern spin on old Hollywood glamour as she spreads the message that it really stinks if all you are is “mean, a liar, pathetic, and alone in life.”  Nice guys prevailing always deserve extra applause.

Today, however, I’m focusing on the nude dress she is seen wearing at the beginning.  Nude has been a popular color this year, whereas in the past it could be critique for washing out the wearer. Now it pop culture is telling us it is demure and fashion-forward, and no one provides better evidence for this than Taylor Swift who has been wearing red and nude as her signature colors since her fame became something to talk about.  You can go different routes with nude but in honor of balmy weather and the underdog, the attention should be brought to the shade in casual silhouettes.  It looks great on shift dresses or layered prairie styles.  These are my picks:

Who Wears Fancy Shorts? We Wear Fancy Shorts!

Given the choice between shorts or a skirt, I’m going to pick the skirt 10 to 1.  Skirts make me feel sexy, ladylike, and free. It is an added bonus that I love to dress up.  For some reason I have also always found them to be much more suitable for my body, even when they are hiked just as high as my shorts.  But this summer with the popularity of dressy shorts I cannot wait to shop around before summer disappears.  I’ve got my eye on the elliptical and a wardrobe filled with fancy pants. Silk, scalloping, pleats, oh my!

The Bold And The Beautiful: Hair Accessories

I remember my first formal vividly. I was wildly excited about dancing the night away, gliding through walkways like a debutant, and of course, gabbing with my friends over Pepsi. But oddly enough I was equally as excited for the prep time to look dolled up. I was doing my own hair, so I curled it and wore it half back. I put on my lace dress with matching pumps, but I couldn’t wait until my date arrived to help me finish the look. I had desperately wanted to wear a corsage which seemed to me to be synonymous with all things fun, jubilant, and beautiful. Okay, so I’m being a little dramatic, and to tell the truth the corsage came with its own problems. (Its band was velcro, and kept sticking to my lace dress.) But you do not need a date to complete your look, and I am not recommending buying yourself a well deserved corsage for a good test grade or job promotion. Recently I have become very attached to big hair pieces. They pop even more than something wrapped around your wrist, and are less invasive. I’m talking about pretty clips, combs and headbands. This is not an idea that I expect everyone to jump on the bandwagon with. And yes, there is such a thing as TOO big. Some people may feel silly wearing rhinestone ornamentation or giant flowers on their head, but if you think it is as cool as I do, I say go for it! My picks are similar to each other, but remember, the skies the limit.

French Connection UK…In An American Hardware Store?

For the past decade, celebrities and designers who make cheaper designs for mainstream stores has been on a steep incline.  In some cases, it works well.  When Madonna brought a line to H&M, stores in Manhattan were packed, and the goods were sold out almost immediately.  Now H&M carries Jimmy Choo and Lavin, of course with garments designed at prices the store and buyers can sustain.  If I’m being truthful, I think it just sort of cheapens the brand overall.  If you covet Jimmy Choo, then you have to buy authentic shoes customized by the designer if you want to feel like Carrie Bradshaw.  However, I recently stumbled upon an exception.  Maybe it is because it is not an an insanely overpriced high-end brand to begin with, but the French Connection looks at Sears (yes, Sears) are awesome!  The catalog showcases sequin dresses, capri jumpsuits, and tulip skirts.  Really, for about $20, what more could you ask for?  Check out some of my picks:

Designer Corner- Mother’s Day Special

In honor of Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, I thought I would do the Designer Corner on a wonderful jewelry company, Swarovski Crystal.  One great aspect of purchasing crystals is that it eliminates the risk of getting blood diamonds.  In addition, the prices are much more reasonable than diamonds with high karat counts.  My mom loves Swarovski’s necklaces, and I would not be surprised if your mother did as well.  I also hear that getting your mother-in-law a brooch might do the trick in healing her less-than-ideal attitude when visiting : )

These are my tips for shopping Swarovski:

1.     Just like everything else, I think you should go to the store and try the pieces on if you are purchasing them for yourself.  Some of the items look dull on the shelves, but look great jingling on a real arm. Other items looks a tad gaudy in real application.

2.     Perfect for grandmothers, mothers, and even me (yes, I do not have my ears pierced) they have gorgeous clip on earrings that look and feel modern!  In fact, if you like one of the styles, there is no reason why someone who does have pierced ears cannot try them out as well.

3.     If you are a collector, they make beautiful crystal figurines. Just be sure to put them on the top shelf if you have children, they are very fragile.

4.     If you can afford to splurge on an evening clutch, they make lovely ones covered in so much light reflecting “bling” that it would be impossible to misplace it during the night.

A Night For Avant-Garde Love: Met Gala 2011

At the Met Gala, anything goes; which makes it one of my favorite events for browsing designer masterpieces.  The party is modest celebrities’ opportunity to get dressed in something kooky and magnificent, and these four celebrities kept the night enchanted in their black-tie best.  Choosing just four ladies to spotlight on my person best dressed list was difficult, so I must mention that these girls were among many who brought serious style to the table.  For example, Ashley Greene stunned in nude netting covered with silver sequins.  And Beyonce’s restrictive Pucci dress will forever be awed by me.

Tell me your thoughts!
